Auckland based professional supervisor
My name is Susan Hawken and I have been a general practitioner for over 25 years. I currently work in student health and offer services in professional supervision and clinical education.
Supporting doctors in their learning
Most recently I have worked as a lead medical educator in the General Practice Education Programme and as the Principal Clinical Education Advisor for the RNZCGP. For the last 8 years I have been involved in facilitating learning for general practice registrars and enjoy supporting doctors preparing for exams. In the early 2000s, I facilitated the professional development component of the overseas trained doctors’ programme.
Developing personal and professional skills
I have a strong academic background with 20 years as a Senior Lecturer in the Medical Programme at the University of Auckland. I held many roles during this time including the Course Coordinator for the year 2 and 3 Personal, Clinical and Communication Skills courses, the Phase 2 Director (overseeing all the clinical learning of years 4 and 5 medical students) and devising a new domain of the curriculum, Personal and Professional Skills, which included a personal health and wellbeing stream.
Working for patients
I have published over 50 articles on topics including professional and communication skills development, quality of life issues for clinicians and the clinical learning environment.
Reflective supervision for health practitioners
I have become increasingly concerned about the levels of over-work, distress, and burnout in general practitioners and other health practitioners. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Supervision awarded with Distinction through the University of Auckland. I am now committed to helping support health practitioners by offering individual reflective supervision.
Professional supervision online or face to face
I offer this professional support in a confidential setting with flexible appointment times. I am available to meet face to face at Bays Health, 13-15 Bute Rd, Browns Bay, Auckland or over zoom. A free initial consultation is offered to discuss the benefits that regular supervision and support may provide.
The story of Kāhu Vision
As a child I was often referred to as ‘Hawk-Eye’ as I like attending to detail.
In Te Ao Māori the hawk, kāhu, is associated with detail as it possesses very precise vision.
In developing my vision for this new venture, I had this image of a kāhu flying over the professional landscape and exploring different perspectives. The kāhu then focuses in and gains clarity on professional work issues.
I am committed to addressing the inequities in healthcare in Aotearoa. I am on an ongoing journey of developing my own cultural competence. I welcome practitioners of all backgrounds and at any stage of their professional journeys to connect with Kāhu Vision.
